The Three Bridge Fiasco is January 26th.

For those unfamiliar with the race, it's a reverse start in  front of the Golden Gate YC. It set up so that everyone  should, theoretically, finish at once, so the first boat  across the line wins. It's run by the Singlehanded  Sailing Society. You can visit them on-line at:

The SSS 2002 calendar (including 3-Bridge Fiasco info) may  be found at:

I'd strongly recommend going to the skippers meeting the  Wednesday before the race. It'll be at the Oakland Yacht  Club, starting around 7:30.

The course more-or-less runs around the three main bridges  in the Central Bay: The Golden Gate, the Bay Bridge and  the Richmond-San Rafael, thus the name. It's actually not  *quite * like that...you have to go around Blackaller  Buoy, around T.I. and around Red Rock. The thing is, you  can go around them in any order you want. You can cross  the Start line in either direction. You can cross the  finish line in either direction. You study the tide  tables beforehand, you sniff out the breeze (if there is  any) when you get there, make your best guess, and go.

Truth is, most years, a whole bunch of the fleet never  finishes. The other thing is, picking the right way to go  is absolutely key to finishing well, or finishing at all.  Conventional wisdom says go the way the tide and currents  work out best, but Kame Richards says to go the way the  wind says to go, so who knows? Last year I did it as my  first solo race in the boat, managed to finish though  sheer perseverence (non spinnaker) but since I picked the  wrong way to go, got skunked in the results. It's a good  time, anyway. Upwards of 150 boats do it, often.

Anyway, I'm doing it, and it looks like Bill and company on  Borderline will be out there doublehanded, so we'll be  around. I'll be tied up SOMEwhere after the race,  probably South Beach so if folks are interested we could  get together and drink something hot after the race for an  hour or so.

Then again, it will get dark early, it might be pretty  cold, and folks might want to head for home, so...

It'd be great to see a bunch of 30's out there.

Alan
