Folks,

Unfortunately, I was unable to make the planning meeting due to being out of town on business. I took a look at the schedule on the web page and it looks great! However, I would like to throw out an alternative proposal on scoring:

The current schedule has 15 events listed but only 5 events are being utilized to determine the season champion. Having only a third of the events scored seems wrong. Having not been at the meeting, my assumption is the fleet is attempting to balance the needs of fleet members who want a limited schedule against those who want a jam packed schedule. Thus, we have a whole bunch of races planned, but only a limited number are to be scored.

Following is a season scoring systems that utilizes all races, but allow individuals who want to do a limited number of races to be competitive:

1) All events are scored.
2) High point scoring is utilized (to reward boats who do well when more boats come out to play).
3) One throw out is provided for every 5 events sailed.
4) An average score is calculated for each boat using all races sailed ( excluding throw outs).
5) A minimum of eight races is required to qualify for the season championship (note, several events have multiple races).
6) The boat with the highest average wins the season championship.

This scoring system provides a tremendous amount of freedom for boats to customize their racing schedule to their individual requirements: if a boat wanted to do only the HDA season, it could qualify; if a boat wanted to avoid signing up for HDA, they could still qualify; if a boat wanted to do only events with parties it could qualify; etc.. In short, the possibilities are virtually limitless.

Just some food for thought going into the Holiday Weekend,

Take care,
Greg Byrne
