I crewed on a Capri 30 for two seasons in the South Bay, and
here's my perspective on the boats.
They don't sail to their rating here, especially when it blows, and especially upwind. They're great boats in moderate to light wind and flat water, that's why they're so popular in Southern California. I believe their ratings are mostly based on their performance down there. They're wide and flat, and it you can't hold them down with crew weight, they get really tossed around in a chop; they're just miserable on the Cityfront in a blow. However, in a race like Vallejo, they'd be just about unbeatable, especially with a light crew on board.
Downwind in moderate air they are close in speed to an Olsen 30. They'd be a sleeper in the Pacific Cup or Doublehanded Transpac, for sure.
I'm curious, Steve...which one did he buy? There were only about 5-6 on the Bay in the late 80's when I was crewing on one. I used to race against "Starlight Express" in the SSS, but we were in different Divisions. The one I crewed on was a grey hulled boat, named "Vivace".
BTW, I regularly race singlehanded against a doublehanded, fractional J-29 in the SSS and we are pretty closely matched. If we invited the Capri to race with us, then it only makes sense to me to welcome the J-29's into the fold.
