Late Sunday afternoon I spoke with Joel Thornton about getting together a work party to help out with the club. Thursday evening, April 8th, seems like a wonderful opportunity for some socializing with a paint brush, broom, etc. Start time 6 PM. Who is available to coordinate projects that need to be done with Joel.

I plan to be there, and I know I won't be alone!!!

Hello all,

I've been on all the Sound small boat courses Kevin has set this year
(yesterday as a spectator), and I think he's doing fine and deserves our
support. But I will make a couple of observations. I thought there were plenty of races, but the legs were a bit short. With the current running as hard as it was this weekend, it worked out, but when there's more breeze I think longer legs will be necessary.

Also, I think that Kevin could take a page out of Dan's book and anticipate things as much as possible. There seemed to be quite a bit of down time between races as the line and marks were adjusted, which might have been started while the fleets were racing.

The pile-ups at the pin end were quite enjoyable to watch as a spectator. I guess he could have skewed the line a little more, but I figure that's part of the game.

In short, if you're listening, Kevin, you're doing a good job, keep going.

Other stuff.

I think it's imperative that we get some social stuff going. And I think it needs to be done as a fleet. It does not have to be immediately following racing, although that's the obvious time.

There are a couple of things that I'd like to initiate on a fleet level. First of all, Let's try to get someone with a camera (video or still) as often as possible. Play it on the big screen TV. That will get people into the club. We've talked about it lots, let's figure out how to do it. Secondly, how about we give some official recognition to some of the people out there who slog away but don't win too often. How about a traveling trophy that gets rather arbitrarily awarded each evening race or regatta. We could some fun with it. For instance, we might just award it first to Jim Barrett for having the fastest brand-new boat out there. There's "most improved," "best heavyweight in a drifter," "best capsize," "Most Vocal," etctera. Possibilities are endless. Whoever owns it gets to pass it along to the next person.

Also, how about we do an overall Laser season champion. Counting both CYC regattas and other regional stuff?

Just thoughts.

Also, does anybody remember the cross-class championships from last year? Does anybody think it's worth doing again?

Stirring the discussion pot a bit --

I just got a direct email that was very complimentary of the Race Committee. However, it was noted that some felt that we could have had shorter courses and more starts. I was left feeling kind or the same way. But when I looked back through past CYC regatta results I could find only one regatta in the last four years where we had more starts
(11 for Lasers at 2001 Fleet

Champs) and only two occasions when we had 10 races in a weekend.

So I'm sure we could have more races if we like - but in similar conditions I don't think we've ever had more than nine races at a regatta during the Dan years. I guess we're greedy.
