All
I concur on working on starts. Unfortunately I think I was over early in the start depicted. But it made for a good photo. The photos were great to show what I was doing compared to the hot shots(you know who you are). As with Paul, I also was unaware of how far back I was sitting. Plus the photos pointed out that I need to loosen my hiking straps. As to video, I have a weather proof video camera we could use. Anybody planning to go out this weekend? Noon? Regards, Newell
Aside: Dan, why are you selling your boat? Hopefully to get a better one.

Thanks to Mike and Kurt on the photos of Fleet Champs.
It is good to see that there is photographic evidence documenting that I did not start every race OCS last weekend - only four of them. Last weekend was a perfect example of understanding time and distance for the boat you are sailing and the conditions of tide.
Having been out of the Laser since July and having spent several weeks sailing J105s in San Francisco (NAs. NOOD and Big Boat) my starting procedure was well out of tune. Going from calling starts on an underpowered big boat where your are starting against 2 knots of water vs. a quick accelerating dingy with current sweeping you across the line during the start was frustrating. Early and slow on the line is no way to win a race. Twice Dan Falk ran over me as I was forced to bail out and go around the pin end with 5 seconds to go.
It would be great to have a couple of days this winter where as a fleet we can get together and focus on starts, getting in 20 or so sequences if possible with video tape documentation (especially with US NAs in Santa Cruz and Canadian NAs in Vancouver).
As for weight positioning in the boat, Mike has pointed out several times to me where I have been sailing with my weight too far aft in the boat. I find that often during the start or as tacking I will slide back to help get the bow out of the water for better maneuverability but forget to move back forward again. It is good to see photos of boat trim with weight aft vs. weight forward.
Looking forward to racing against everyone in November and I am open to tune any weekend, just drop me an e-mail.
