CYC One Design Racers,
Next week is the last Thursday racing night of the summer and the 100th Thursday night for our Race Committee. This mix of paid and volunteer staff deserve to hear our thanks for a job well done. As our Commodore said in the August Leadline, the current RC will be retiring after this year. The core crew on the RC boat that were out nearly every one of the 100 Thursdays are:
Dan Carpenter: Principal Race Officer, and Listener Extraordinaire
Leslie Keller (volunteer): Voice of the RC, Scorekeeper, and High Standard Setter
Mary Margaret Crommerty (volunteer): The Can-Do, and Will-Do anything crewmember and also Chief of Morale
Cisco and Greg: Whaler Drivers- These guys understand the current and wind in Shilshole Bay better than many of the racers. They have set a very high bar for quickly and efficiently placing square lines and courses. I challenge anyone to set a starting line in 500 ft of water like these guys do.
Others (volunteers): Many other people have put in a significant amount of volunteer time with the core crew above. These people have also made a significant contribution to the RC and deserve our thanks. Each volunteer was made to feel like they were making a significant contribution and because of this were able to learn many valuable lessons. The leadership demonstrated by the core group is a model for any team effort, whether as a big boat crew, or a business.
We must all be patient with the RC that will start next year. The new group will go through a learning curve and it is inevitable that mistakes will be made. A constructive method of communicating our desires will be everyones responsibilty. Hopefully we will be lucky enough to get someone who is as good at listening as Dan Carpenter.
Please express your appreciation for the job that this RC has done over the last 100 Thursdays. Keep in mind that they have also been on the water for the last 100 Wednesdays and have devoted many weekends to this duty.
