Hey Folks,
I am writing to see if anyone can lend some assistance to a great laser fleet back east. There is
proposal in place in Westport, CT to place long line oyster nets in the sailing/racing area
directly outside Cedar Point Yacht Club. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Cedar Point, it
is the largest Laser fleet in the country and a great ambassador to our sport. The 2004 NAs are
schedule to be there. The Laser Frostbite fleet (always open to the public) often boasts 30 boats
and occasionally as many as fifty on any given weekend. The first day I showed up in January, it
was blowing storm force winds, the air temperature was in the 20s and the water temperature was
right around 40. Still under these conditions 27 boats showed up to race. Much like Corinthian
Yacht Club, Cedar Point is lone open window to sail boat racing, for the college grad on a shoe
string budget, the novice racer, and the long time pro alike.
The proposed Oyster nets represent a substantial threat to this access point. At a draft of ten
feet the nets will be well with in range of a 17 foot turtled Laser mast. Further more, it will
be near impossible to anchor racing marks and committee boats. There was a public hearing last
night, and a representative of the aquaculture group claimed that long lines had been implemented
in the Pacific Northwest, with no ill effects on sailing in the area. Is anyone familiar with
this claim? Any help would be appreciated.
