All,
I would be interested in how other sailors plan their Laser sailing time and how we could best help each other. I have never had any formal coaching , but have benefited greatly from other sailors in our fleet by talking on and off the water and informal sailing. This is my list of sailing modes in terms of the main focus.

  1. Informal tactical racing: OK to tack on each other.
  2. Speed testing: Short legs intended to compare speed, trying not to tack on others. May also include doing 360s if you are way ahead or when someone crashes to keep the fleet together.
  3. "Burns" such as to West Point mostly for the workout.
  4. "Fun" Just planing all over the place in heavy air. Nothing to think about other than to make sure everyone is safe.
  5. "Loaner" I just want to sail by myself as hard as I feel like at the time. I have noticed these modes just tend to occur informally depending on the conditions and the number of boats out, but it may help to decide something in advance, particularly #1 vs. #2.
