Thank you Mike for your contributions to this group. I appreciate your leadership, and having completed my first year sailing in Seattle I am thrilled at the level of organization and competition which we have the simple privilege to participate in.
Race fees: Nearly every regatta and club I can recall bases fees on the number of people not a per boat fee. To me this pay to play taxes everyone enjoying the benefits of a race committee. It has nothing to do with how well off a class sailor is, it is just an equal tax.
Winter sailing: I am in favor of unorganized sailing and training versus racing. My racing to training ratio this year was probably 10:1. I sailed most every Thursday, but rarely participated in any other night sailing (J24 in the way-not next year+ACE-). Two nights is all I can spare, and for me the winter is my tune up time and catch up time. I would be happy with a scheduled time, no buoys or committee, no insurance hassles, and rescuing being completed with the other Lasers on the water. Also, personally I can't commit to Sunday sailing the same way I can Thursday, so for me the drop in format works better.
And to the questions at the beginning:
What are we going to do for winter sailing? as per above, based on limited ability to contribute and participate I prefer no official racing.
What's going to happen next year with CYC? don't understand, not CYC member
Is the season race fee going to be increased (if so, by how much)? Hope not, seemed about right to me, however if the cost of running the racing program is not covered and can be justified I will pay my fair share.
Will the lasers have to wait 18 minutes for the classes with 2-3 boats to
start? If Lasers are paying their fair share, I would look to more equity. Rotate starts, and/or more effort put into shorter courses with one more race for Lasers per night.
Will I need to join SLF as well as CYC for 2003? Perfect question, I did neither in 2002 as I got started a little late, but I have sort of stumbled into my knowledge of requirements here. (ie. not being able to register for a CYC package, and while I only started joining the fleet for beers in the club in August- thank you these were some of my summer sailing highlights- realizing that this is a club to belong to and one I wanted to participate in rather than rushing home).
What are my SLF dues used for? New, don't know.
Will SLF need to pay the +ACQ-800 for regatta insurance in 2003? If this relates to winter sailing I would vote no. I would rather the fleet use +ACQ-800 to attract new members (buy a very used boat for new sailor to try)
Who will be the overall regatta chairman for Frigid Digit 2003? I can also volunteer as an assistant, but having not participate in before I can not chair.
