I have a similar problem on my GP.
When I shift into forward, the engine just increases rpm and then
"slams" into gear. This has
been diagonosed as a "slipping" clutch problem and requires someone to
remove the clutch
and "put it on the bench" to do whatever needs to be done to fix it.
Keeping it from slamming
is easy in my case. I quickly hit reverse and then immediately shift
into forward. The shift is
then fairly smooth.
When coming into dock at slow speeds (1 knot) the transmission will
sometimes
slip in and out of gear, but that's about the only other effect.
What you need to do is have your favorite expensive mechanic first check
the linkage.
Normally this is the problem and is easy to fix. Failing that, he will
tell you that you have
to have the clutch redone.
Don't forget to get two different inspections.
