2001 Ahmanson Cup
Saturday
Well, the wiser boats either didn't race or retired during the
first race. The rest of us were not quite as clever. Ghost should
offer to give the race of the fleet a lesson in heavy air spinnaker
flying. Snafu had a slightly out of control set, managed to hang
on for a while (hey, looks like we won't have to jibe) and then
deathrolled (Andale, who wisely didn't set, is pretty sure we dunked
the tip of the mast). Sheeesh, I thought Newport & especially Ahmanson
was suppose to have winds on the light side? Anyway, we eventually came
up again and after counting bodies and getting the spinnaker down, we
continued to race. Amazingly, no one went overboard, nothing broke,
and even the spinnaker survived (a little worse for the wear). We
finished that race & the others Saturday using our #2 downwind which
was quite fast (over 7 knots) when the broaches by the other remaining
boats were factored in. Ghost had no problems that I could see
and flew down the course under spinnaker all day for 3 bullets.
Race 1: Ghost, Joann, Problem Child, Snafu, Andale (DNF: Redline, Aries, Spray)
Race 2: Ghost, Snafu!, Joann, Problem Child (DNF: Andale DNS: Redline, Aries, Spray)
Race 3: Ghost, Joann, Snafu, Problem Child (DNS: Redline, Aries, Andale, Spray)
Sunday
Much better, maybe 10 knots or so. #1 & 1/2 oz time Ghost, Joann & Redline were the ones to watch. Great racing.
Race 4: Ghost, Redline, Joann, Problem Child, Snafu, Aries
(OCS: Andale DNS: Spray)
I was listening on VHF & never heard the horn or radio call
for that OCS. Bummer. Andale had a great race.
Race 5: Redline, Joann, Ghost, Aries, Andale, Snafu, Problem Child
Series:
Ghost, Joann, Snafu, Problem Child, Redline, Aries, Andale, Spray
Great Racing!
