Mike--

I know the problems you are having. The one and only time I had insurance work done on my other boat, I first tried to get Harry Gibson because of his excellent reputation, but he was too busy. After several other attempts at using a small, one-man-type repair company (one of whom met me at the boat at 10:00 a.m. on a Saturday morning and was already drunk) I wound up having all the work done at Windward Yachts -- at over twice the estimated price. Fortunately, Windward Yachts does good work and the insurance company didn't complain about the cost. The only problem was that Windward would not put the boat back in the water until they got paid ("no cash, no splash") and the insurance company took an extra three weeks to get them a check.

I also used Peter Fransen (per Doug Johnstone's recommendation) for some work on Spirit when I first got her. He did good work at a reasonable price, but I could never get him to come back and finish all of the things I wanted done. He tends to over commit himself and then, if a conflict develops between working on your boat and working on some big, monied boat, he just doesn't show up.

My only recommendation to you is to give "Boatyard" a call. "Boatyard" is the boatyard right next to Windward which used to be Yanmar Boatyard. It's where Peter Fransen works out of. Independent of Peter Fransen they seem to do pretty good work and understand deadlines, schedules and due dates. More expensive than a Harry Gibson or Peter Fransen, but less expensive than Windward.

    Good luck.
