We have been exploring asymmetricals. I have just learned that PHRF is in the final reading on allowing asymmetricals. There is supposed to be an article on this subject in this months issue of Santana. Currently you get a six second penalty if you carry one. AS of the first of the year there will be no standard penalty but you will have to declare you intend to carry one and have your boat reviewed to see what if any penalty your boat will get. I have asked PHRF to review the boat with an asymmetrical to see if it is worthwhile carrying on board. Steve Murphy has a couple of these and has been kind enough to let me borrowed one. I took it to my sailmaker and it looks like it will not conform to the new rule without being cut down, so be careful in ordering one. I hope to get to the last day of the fleet race and try it to see what it does against a regular spinnaker (yes it is currently illegal to use).
