Well, this sail discussion has been very useful to those of us tempted to buy good enough sails
to race a little.

So far I've learned that Polyester mains are at least competitive, and that a carbon fiber boom can actually be cheaper than aluminum.

I'm sure Splash Tango isn't being singled out in a negative way, but their sail inventory was posted in their sale notice just when the number of sails necessary to be competitive was being discussed.

And it IS very informative regarding what one boat feels is necessary to compete at the highest level.
(and they have been proven to be very competitive.)

When I add up the total number of sails purchased from 96 on I come up with:

  1. Five Quantum sails plus light Quantum #1 plus a set (5?) of North sails that were sold, but still should count because they would if there were a sail limit. Also there is a big advantage and big cost to be able to try out various sails until you find the fastest for you.

1999 TOTAL 11

  1. Listed in the ad as used for 1998 nationals: 6 sails

1996 TOTAL 6 Total sails bought from 96 to present: 17

I should think sailmakers would like this buying pattern even better than better than fleets with sail limits!

I did check out the other fleets such as J-105s, Melges etc. Man were they restrictive!
Often limited to all polyester and one jib, one main, one or two chutes.
