Actually, Aliens and many other PNW boats have "custom carbon" booms, and mine cost a bit less than a new aluminum boom. It has lasted better, too (well, so far).
There is currently no limit on the number of class sails you can buy per year. This will be proposed as an amendment and voted up or down at Nationals this year.
I favor this amendment, and also the dacron limit, to keep the focus of the class on fun sailing and skill, rather than big budgets. But for budgets, putting a class limit on new sails per year will be more effective than the dacron limit. The two are independent. Many other one design classes have such sail limits. One-design constitutions are, many of them, MUCH stricter than ours. The idea is, level sailing, so skill is the deciding factor. Take a look at the class rules for Melges 24s, or Mumm 30s! Or j24s, or Lasers ...
