In response to numerous anti #2 e-mails.
I used to feel the same way until a few years ago. Let me clarify that I
generally sail PHRF and that #2 for me is 143%. We also use 155% #1's
(from other e-mails I saw 150's as your #1's). My #2 has given us the
ability to not only be competitive in moderate air (13-22 knts) but
actually win races. We will go with a #2 and a tuck before changing to
the #3 (as long as we have the crew weight). This is due to the waves we
encounter , the #3 not having as much power. For one design it doesn't
matter, you could all attempt to sail with blades only as long as sail
area is limited to all. What would happen is that there would be at least
two distinctly different #3 designs that you would have to have to be
competitive in light - moderate air and heavy air. A total sail inventory
limitation (lower than the current number) and a max overlap genoa size
might be better than excluding certain size genoas.
