J/35 Outboard Genoa Tracks - Why?

I've been studying the rigging on J/35s here on the Chesapeake Bay, and have noticed that some have outboard genoa tracks, while others do not. I was told by one owner that they are a must, but didn't get the chance to ask why. Seems to me like a temporary barber hauler on the rail would work just fine for close reaching, and these outboard tracks just add permanent weight (not to mention toe-catchers). Is there some other reason for them? Received on Thu Oct 12 12:34:24 2000
