To Fleet #6 and all National Championship Competitors: I have just received a ruling on two Rule Book "issues" from Our National J35 fleet Measurer, Larry Shell.
1) The rule book presently shows a "straight line" measurement for the foward flotation mark of 1470 mm on Plan E, (Rule# 3.3). A statement on Plan E is included as follows: BOW FLOATATION MARK: "The lower edge of the bow flotation mark shall be 1470 mm measured down from the curve of the stem from the sheerline at the stem line." If the mark is measured "straight line", as indicated in the drawing, it will be approximately 10 to 12 mm lower than if it is measured "down the curve of the stem". Larry has ruled that it is the intent of the technical committee to measure all boats "down the curve of the stem(1470 mm)". This is the measurement presently built into the National Bow Displacement Tool which will be used to measure boats participating in the National J35 Championships.
2) The use of spinnaker containers rigged to launch and/or recover spinnakers from below the deck of the J35 are not permitted per Rule 5.6.2. This includes those containers fitted below, or into, the foward, or any, hatch built into the J35 deck. The intent is that all spinnakers will be launched and recovered above the deck. The cabin passageway is not considered a "hatch".
I request that all National Championship boat owners arrange to have their boats ready for inspection and notify me or Rob Addler as soon as possible. We would like to complete as many boats as possible before the Bar opens on Thursday, we thank you.
